A good reader has strong phonological awareness and an ability to visualize and recognize words they have seen before. When these abilities are not intact, reading can be a very difficult, frustrating experience.

Some signs of a struggling reader:

Guesses unfamiliar words
Knows a word one day, but does not recognize it another day.
Leaves out sounds or syllables in words.
Reverses letters or sounds in words
Hates to read!

Birdmark Readers are children and adults who have struggled with reading or with learning to read and have decided to do something about it.

For 7 years I have helped struggling readers become independent readers and am now offering services in the New York City area. I specialize in strengthening the foundations of the reading and spelling skills of children and adults with mild to significant reading difficulties such as auditory processing disorder (APD) and dyslexia. The teaching methods I employ reflect current reading research. I provide:

Positive, one-to-one sessions shaped to the needs of each student
Assessments before and after session-work to identify specific areas of strength and weakness
Intensive work to develop phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency.
